FAQs About Your NetID

The following are answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the UConn NetIDs. These contain pertinent information all users will need to know about obtaining, using, and maintaining their NetID Accounts. These pages will be updates as more information is given to the Helpdesk and as further questions are asked.

Questions and Answers

  • What is the NetID Service?
    • NetID is the Network Identifier (account) that UConn issues to allow you access to certain computing services. These services include:
      • eBudget, ePortfolio, CPIA Tutoring, Library E-Delivery System, Law School Web Applications, Onecard Online Account Management, WebCT and WebVista, NetReg (Network Registration), Huskymail (Student Email), Proxy, Wireless (Bluesocket), VPN, and Student Affairs services Studio Abroad, Virtual Career Fair, WebCentral, and Exchange (Faculty/Staff email and calendaring).

Note: The list of services will grow, until many of UConn's computing services allow you to use a common ID and password to login.

  • What is my NetID and how do I obtain one?
    • Go to https://netid.uconn.edu and click on "Find your NetID". Input your last name, your 8-digit date of birth, and your Student Admin System (PeopleSoft) ID or your Payroll ID, click on "Search"and the NetID system will give you your NetID. If you do not already have a NetID, you will need to obtain a registration code.

  • Why is my NetID unfriendly?
    • In an effort to create hundreds of thousands of NetIDs for all people having association with UConn (past, present and future), it is necessary to create IDs that are not necessarily 'friendly.' Consider that if we were to allow IDs that use your first initial and last name (jdoe), eventually we would need to add a numbering scheme (joe3776) to make each ID unique. A uniform scheme avoids name conflicts and arguments. The eventual goal is to have the issued NetID be the only ID you will need to know and use to access UConn resources.

  • Can I change my NetID?
    • The NetID is intended to be a purely unique, irrevocable, persistent identifier for each individual in the University Community. The NetID format is "loosely based" on the user's name, which means it may use initials or other letters from the user's name. Most IDs are created using either the users initials, or the first two letters of the first name and the first letter of the last name. The automated process that creates the IDs is entirely systematic and does not always generate the exact ID that a user wants. The generated IDs do not need to be shared with others; it is only a set of characters for logging into systems by a single individual. Personalization of your electronic identity to match how you would like others to know you can be done at the UITS Mail Form. This will allow you to change your FirstName.LastName@uconn.edu or FirstName.LastName@huskymail.uconn.edu.
  • I am new to the University and just received my NetID.  How do I set my initial password?
    • You should receive a postal mailing to your home address containing a 25 character "Registration Code".  Visit https://netid.uconn.edu and click on "Use your Registration Code to set your NetID password" in the "New users" section.  After verifying your identity by entering your NetID, Date of Birth, and either your Student Admin (Peoplesoft) ID or your Payroll ID, you will be prompted for this Registration Code.  Enter it, including the dashes, and you will be allowed to set your password. Once you have set your password, please visit the link labeled
"Review/change your Secret Questions and Answers" and create your Secret Questions and Answers.

  • What if I've forgotten my password and need to reset it?
    • Passwords are much easier to maintain and reset if forgotten or lost. Go to https://netid.uconn.edu and click on "Reset your forgotten password". Input your NetID, your 8-digit date of birth, and your Student Admin System (PeopleSoft) ID or your Payroll ID, click on "Begin". You will come to a page and you will see this at the top: NetID: abc12345
Password Reset interface locked until: Questions and Answers are supplied. This account is not authorized to use the Reset Password Interface
    • On the left side of the page click on "Review/Change your Secret Questions and Answers". You will need to enter in your NetID, it will automatically put in a password for you, log in and you will see "Select three questions, and supply answers to them. Answers are not case sensitive". Once you select three questions from the drop down menus and answer them be sure to click on "Update". Once updated, on the left hand side of the page click on "Reset your Forgotten Password" link.
    • Input your NetID, your 8-digit date of birth, and your Student Admin System (PeopleSoft) ID or your Payroll ID, click on "Begin".
    • You will come to the series of questions you just created, you must answer them. It will bring you to a page to "Set a new password for abc12345". Type in your new password and then confirm it in the corresponding field. Click on "Change".

How do I create my "Secret Questions and Answers?

Creating "Secret Questions and Answers" will allow you to reset your password in the future if you forget it.  Visit https://netid.uconn.edu and click on "Review/change your Secret Questions and Answers".  After logging in, choose three questions from the drop-down lists, and supply answers to them.  You can, if you wish for additional security, also supply a fourth question and answer of your own choosing.  Once you have completed this, click the button marked "update". If you would rather not be able to reset your password using these questions, click the button marked "clear & disable".  This will clear all of your questions and answers, preventing your password from being reset by using them.

    • You save time by installing the Root Certificate once. This tells your browser to trust all sites that are secured by UConn. Otherwise you will have to install a Web Certificate for each and every secure UConn web site.
