Taking A Screenshot

This article provides instructions for taking a screenshot on common devices.

Mac

Screenshot of your entire screen

  1. Press Shift-Command (⌘)-3.
  2. Find the screenshot as a .png file on your desktop.

  1. Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a cross-hair.
  2. Move the cross-hair to where you want to start the screenshot, then drag to select an area.
  3. While dragging, you can hold Shift, Option, or Space bar to change the way the selection moves.

  1. When you’ve selected the area you want, release your mouse or trackpad button. To cancel, press the Esc (Escape) key before you release the button.
  2. Find the screenshot as a .png file on your desktop.

  1. Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a cross-hair.
  2. Press the Space bar. The pointer changes to a camera.
  3. Move the camera over a window to highlight it.
  4. Click your mouse or trackpad. To cancel, press the Esc (Escape) key before you click.
  5. Find the screenshot as a .png file on your desktop.

Windows

  1. Press Print Screen (often on the insert key) on your keyboard.
  2. The entire screen is now copied to your Clipboard.
  3. Press ctrl-v to paste your Clipboard.

  1. Open the Snipping Tool
  2. Click New then click and drag the cursor over the desired portion of the screen
  3. Release and select copy to save the image to your Clipboard

  • Some computers (mostly Windows 10) also have a snipping tool hotkey:  (Windows-Shift-S)

  1. Make sure the desired window is active by clicking in it once.
  2. Press Alt-Print Screen.
  3. The screenshot will be saved to your Clipboard again.

iPhone

  1. Press and hold the sleep/wake button on the top-right of the phone.
  2. Press and release the home button simultaneously.
  3. The screenshot will be in your photo library.

Android

    Note: this works with most, but not all Android phones.

  1. Hold down the sleep/wake and volume-down buttons simultaneously.
  2. Hold down until your screen flashes
