Scantron Exam Scanning Service

This articles provides on overview of the Scantron Exam Scanning Service provided by ITS. This service is available to all UConn instructors.

The Scantron Exam Scanning service scores up to five different versions of multiple choice exams that can have up to 200 questions. Student exams are scored against an answer key provided by the instructor. Online and printed reports listing student grades or item analysis are provided.

The system uses Scantron Form No. 4521 8.5 x 11 blue exam scanning sheets available through Central Stores. Forms other than No. 4521 are not supported.

When instructors and students enter information into the sheets, they must use a number 2 lead pencil. No ink, stray marks, or correction fluid may be on any of the sheets, including the key sheets. This condition could cause damage to the machine and/or incorrect scoring of the exams. If ink or stray marks are discovered, the exam will not be processed.

To submit completed Scantron sheets to the service, complete the three instructor key sheets, which includes the answer sheet, and have the students enter the exam identification information on their answer sheets.

Put the completed exams and three key sheets in an envelope marked with instructor’s name and U-Box, and then put them in a blue exam drop box (see locations below).

Exams will be returned through campus mail the next business day.  Instructors will also receive an email from with a subject of Secure Mail.  The email will contain a link to the exam result files.

New Self-Service Exam Scanning Service

We have recently instituted self-service scanning of exams. There are now two new Scantron desktop scanners located on the first floor of Homer Babbidge Library near the ITS Help Center desk. You will find more information at the Scantron Self-Serve Exam Scanning Procedures link.

Hours and Drop Location for Exam Scanning


  • Monday through Friday – 08:00 A.M. to 04:00 P.M.
  • Saturday and Sunday – Closed

Drop Box Location

Completed exams and key sheets should be enclosed in an envelope marked with instructor’s name and U-Box and then put them in the blue exam drop box in Homer Babbidge Library, near the ITS Help Center desk on the first floor

If you would like to pick up exams, please note this preference on the envelope along with contact information. Instructors will be notified by ITS staff when they are available for pick up at the ITS Help Center. If someone other than the instructor is picking up the exams, please call 6-4357 to provide the name of this person.

Drop-Off: Only Faculty may drop off Scantron Exams for processing. Students are not allowed to drop them off to the Help Center. If a student arrives they may drop it in the blue box by the Husky Bucks machine. If they are worried they may leave a note or message at the Help Center but we CANNOT take the exams.

Finals week: 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM

Scantron Pickup

Pick Up: Faculty & Students MAY pick up already scanned items since scores were already processed and an email was sent to the professor. If someone other than the instructor is picking up the exams, they may call 6-4357 to provide the name of this person.
