Installing Microsoft Office

University Office365 Accounts:

Faculty, staff and students will have active Office365 accounts during their time with the university. These accounts can be used to access Microsoft Office apps online via the Microsoft Office webpage or by signing into an installation of Microsoft Office.

The license attached to these accounts will expire upon graduation/separation from the University.

Microsoft Office Product Keys for Windows:

Students have the option to download installations of Microsoft Office for Windows computers via uconn.onthehub.com, free of charge. The product key can be used to license an installation of Microsoft Office Professional Plus and will remain active perpetually. If using Microsoft Office Home and Business, the product keys remain valid indefinitely for students only if attached to a personal Microsoft account (non-UConn affiliated account).

The onthehub website will stop providing product keys and software downloads after 24 months. Product key and download extensions are available for purchase through the onthehub website.

Note. If the product key is attached to a UConn email account, it will expire upon graduation/separation from the university.

Product keys can only be used on one machine. If you have reached the activation limit contact Microsoft, they will dissociate the product key from the previous computer.

Installing Microsoft Office for Windows

The details on the installation, activation, and troubleshooting procedures for the Windows version of Microsoft Office.

Note. Office products can only be activated once. If they have reached the activation limit contact Microsoft, they will dissociate the product key from the previous computer. 

  1.  Navigate to uconn.onthehub.com.
  2.  Enter your NetID credentials and click Login.
  3.  Once logged in, the screen below will be displayed. Select your preferred Office software from the list provided on the home screen.
  4.  Read the description to make sure that the computer fits the system requirements and the account fulfills the eligibility requirements. If the criteria is met, select Add to Cart.
  5.  When it is finished processing, select your shopping cart (this is located at the top right of the screen) and click Check Out.
  6.  Sign the Microsoft Licensing agreement. Make sure this is understood before signing. Type your username (NetID i.e. abc12345) and signature (First and Last name i.e. Jonathan Husky) before hitting I Accept at the bottom.
  7.  Verify the information listed and select Proceed With Order.
  8.  Select Download. Save the product key shown in the main box.
    • Note. If a product key is connected with a personal Microsoft Account, a download will also be available off Microsoft’s website. A download off Microsoft’s website will not expire.   
    • Note. Product keys and downloads off uconn.onthehub.com will only be available on your UCONN account for a 24 month period. If you wish to extend access to the product key and download, purchase for a 6 month extension is available. 
  9.  Once the download is complete, run the program.
    • If downloading Microsoft Office Home and Business please follow the download instructions for Installing Microsoft Office for Mac.
  10.  A window will pop up asking for Microsoft to make changes to your computer. Click Yes.
  11.  The Microsoft Office installer will begin.
  12.  When the installation is complete a window will appear that will direct you to activate the licencing.

Activating Microsoft Office for Windows

Activating Microsoft Office:

1. Microsoft Office must be activated immediately after instillation.

2. Open one of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).

3. A window will appear, enter the Product Key provided to you during the installation and click Continue.

4. If you wish to sign into Office and save documents to the cloud with OneDrive, click Next and follow the directions . If not, then click X on the top right hand corner of the window. Office will now be active on your computer.

Re-Activating Microsoft Office:

If you have been using a trial version of Office previously, you need to go through the process of re-activating Office

  1.  Open one of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc).
  2.  Click File.
  3. Click Account, and then click Activate/Change Product Key.
  4.  Enter the product key and click continue.
  5.  Exit out of the Office program and restart it.

Installing & Activating Microsoft Office for Mac

Downloading Office for Mac requires a few different steps than for a Windows computer. A personal Microsoft account is required Office activation on Mac. Do not use a UConn email for the Microsoft account.

Downloading Microsoft Office Using a Microsoft Live Account

  1. Navigate to uconn.onthehub.com.
  2. Enter your NetID credentials and click Login.
  3. Once logged in, the screen below will be displayed. Select Office for Mac 2016 or 2019.
  4. Read the description to make sure that the computer fits the system requirements and that the account fulfills the eligibility requirements. If the criteria is met, select Add to Cart.
  1. When it is finished processing, select your shopping cart (this is located at the top right of the screen) and select Check Out.
  2. Read the “Microsoft Student Option User Acceptance Form” and Accept the licensing agreement by using your username (NetID i.e. abc12345) and signature (First and Last name i.e. Jonathan Husky).
  3. Verify the information listed and select Proceed With Order.
  4. Write down the Product Key for later and select Download.
  5. A new tab will be opened. On the new page select Download.

  6. It will ask to login to user’s personal Microsoft account (This account is run and monitored by Microsoft and is different than your normal UConn credentials). ***Do not use your UConn email for this step!*** Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  7. Confirm Account Settings and select Next.

  8. Click on Install from the following page.

This is will download the .pkg installer file.

Installing

  1. Open the .pkg installer in your Downloads folder after you have finished downloading from uconn.onthehub.com.
  2. The Microsoft Office installer will launch. Click Continue.
  3. Click Continue and Agree at the license section.
  4. Select Install for all users of this computer and click Continue.

  5. Enter the Mac's administrator password and select Install Software in order to continue the installation.
  6. Microsoft Office will begin installing. Once the installation is finished, select close.

  7. Open one of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Sign in with your Microsoft account to activate.
  8. You are ready to use Microsoft Office.

 

Repairing Microsoft Office for Windows

This situation generally occurs when the file association of file type extension is incorrect. To correct the problem, one must ensure to check and correct the file associations by "repairing the Office or Office program", or by using the "regserver" command. The repairing of Office would make the program free from errors or any type of corruptions thus making the files accessible.

  1. Close all running Office programs and turn off any running anti-virus programs.
  2. Click the Start button (or equivalent button on the lower left of the screen) and open Run.
  3. Type the following command: appwiz.cpl. This will open the Add or Remove Programs window.E
  4. Right click the installed office program.
  5.  Click Change. 
  6.  The Microsoft Office Setup window will be displayed asking to choose your repair method of choice. Select Quick Repair or Online Repair.
    • The Quick Repair option is faster and runs without an internet connection but may not fix all issues.
    • The Online Repair option takes longer but fixes all issues while using an internet connection.
  7. Once you have chosen a repair option, the program will check for  installed files and replace or install any files from an earlier version of Office which may have been the wrong size, damaged, corrupt or missing.
  8.  A completion message will be displayed when the repair wizard is finished. Turn your anti-virus programming back on.

Use of Regserver:

The regserver command is used re-register the Office program itself. This command is useful when you want to rewrite all the program registry keys and re-associate the programs with suitable program files.

1. Close the program that needs to be re-registered.

2. Go to the command prompt.

3. Type the specified path in which the program's exe file is located (in quotes) and/unregserver. In this case it is: "C:Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /unregserver in the box.

4. Immediately after type the same file path (with quotes) with regserver at the end. In this case it is "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficewinword.exe" /regserver.

Uninstalling Microsoft Office for Windows

  1. Open the start menu and search for Add or Remove Programs.
    • Alternatively can use Run by following the steps listed in Repairing Office for Windows to open Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select the version of Microsoft Office you want to uninstall.
  3.  Select Uninstall.
  4.  A window will appear from Office, select Uninstall.
  5.  Microsoft Office will begin to run its uninstaller.
  6. When Office is successfully uninstalled a message will be displayed. A computer reset is required to complete the process.

 

Uninstalling Microsoft Office for Mac

  1. Enter the Applications folder.
  2. Open the Microsoft Office folder > Additional Tools > Remove Office.
  3. The Uninstaller will launch.
  4. Click continue and all components of Microsoft Office will be uninstalled.
